Learn vital lab skills!
Do you want to discover a new species? Perhaps contribute to the study of Global Biodiversity?
You've come to the right place!
In this class, students will select an organism, isolate its DNA, and prepare a unique sample for DNA sequencing. Sequenced DNA, known by taxonomists as DNA Barcodes, lie at the heart of The International Barcode of Life's effort to identify every multicellular organism on planet Earth (see: ibol.org). In addition to their role in describing biodiversity, barcodes are used to identify pathogens (e.g. the virus that causes COVID 19), authenticate natural health products, and determine what kind of meat is REALLY in that Chicken Nugget!
This Class Is Hands-On:
- Solution Preparation
- pH measuring
- Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCRs)
- Electrophoretic gels
- DNA Sequencing
